About MaleVox

MaleVox is a dynamic male-voiced a cappella ensemble based in Birmingham, founded in 2018.  We rehearse every other Thursday at Trefoil House in the city centre.  We're a group of highly-motivated singers driven by a spirit of musical excellence, friendship, and a love of barbershop harmony.   We strive for musical excellence, aiming for a unified, resonant sound.  We sing music from the choral, jazz, pop, and contemporary genres, primarily arranged in the barbershop style.  We have earned multiple accolades since we formed, including most recently Midlands Choir of the Year at the 2024 Lichfield Festival and 3rd place at the 2025 British Association of Barbershop Singers Convention.

Role Overview

MaleVox is looking for an inspiring and knowledgeable Musical Director to join us on our journey. We’re searching for someone with the skill, vision, and drive to bring out the very best in us, guiding our growth with creativity and passion. With the support of our dedicated committee and music team, you’ll lead us in our shared goal of becoming a world-class vocal ensemble.  This role offers great potential for personal development, and we would welcome an application from someone who wants to grow with the group over the long term.

Key Responsibilities

• Artistic Leadership
  • Craft engaging and inclusive rehearsals that champion musical growth, to engage and inspire our singers and foster enthusiasm and cameraderie.
  • Work with the chorus to guide our musical choices, including selecting our repertoire, shaping our chorus sound, and appointing the music team.
• Conducting & Performance
  • Lead bi-weekly rehearsals every other Thursday, 19:15 - 22:00.
  • Lead the chorus at our contests, concerts, and occasional weekend rehearsals and outreach events.
• Vocal & Musicianship Coaching
  • Provide tailored vocal guidance to the chorus, developing healthy singing and vocal technique, with the aim of achieving naturally resonant vocal production, good intonation, and a cohesive ensemble sound.
  • An understanding of the barbershop style: 4 part close harmony with the melody as an inside voice, sung with just intonation, producing an expanded sound with reinforced overtones.

Who You Are

• A choir or ensemble director, with the ability to enhance our signature expanded sound, with lock and ring created by reinforced overtones.
• A confident and engaging conductor capable of delivering efficient and inspiring rehearsals.
• A supportive coach focused on singing technique, musicality and performance.
• Adaptable, collaborative, and inclusive.
• Located in or near Birmingham (UK), or able to travel regularly for in-person rehearsals.
